Located west of Peninsular India in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep is well known Union Territory of India. Lakshadweep is a group of islands and its name “Lakshadweep” is derived from “Lakshadweepa,” and its meaning is one hundred thousand islands in the languages of Sanskrit, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Tamil etc. Formerly, it  was also popular with different names such as Laccadive, Minicoy, Aminidivi Islands etc.

It can be seen on the given Lakshadweep Map that territory is an archipelago consisting of twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks, with a total of about thirty-nine islands and islets. Most of the atolls have a northeast-southwest orientation with the islands lying on the eastern rim, and a predominantly submerged reef on the western rim, enclosing a lagoon. It has about ten inhabited islands, seventeen uninhabited islands, close islets, four newly formed islets and five submerged reefs. Significant islands are Kavaratti, Agatti, Minicoy, and Amini. Agatti has an airport with direct flights from Kochi.
The total surface area of the territory is only 32 sq km, but total lagoon area that it covers about 4,200 sq km. The region forms single district with 10 divisions and it is governed by an administrator appointed by the President of India under article 239 of the Indian Constitution. Kavaratti is the largest town and capital of the territory. However, it comes under the jurisdiction of Kerala High Court.

The group islands can be approached either by air or by ship; the airport is located on Agatti island. The economy of the territory is dependent upon tourism, fishing, and coconut cultivation.
