Spread in about 53,483 sq. km in northern India, Uttarakhand is known for its natural beauty. It is located in the western Himalaya region. The state is carved out from Uttar Pradesh as 27th state of India in November 2000. Interestingly, there are many gods’ places here and because of this; the state is popular as Devbhumi (land of Gods). It is worldwide popular as Hindu pilgrimage sites. As a result, religious tourism forms a major portion of the tourism in the state.

Uttarakhand, the heaven of natural landscape shares its boundary with Himachal Pradesh in the north-west, Uttar Pradesh in the south; however, it also shares its international boundary with Nepal in the south-east and with Tibet (an Autonomous region in China) in north-east.

Ganga and Yamuna, the two most sacred rivers of India originate from Gangotri and Yamunotri regions respectively of the state. The rivers and its tributaries flow through the religious places including Badrinath, Kedarnath, Haridwar etc. Besides, the state is also rich in terms of its cultures and traditions; Garhwali and Kumaoni are the two major traditions. It is believed that many of the traditional stories are originated in the form of lyrical ballads and folklore. Interestingly, all these folklores were generally chanted by itinerant singers. Furthermore, the dances of the state portray the life and human existence and describe the myriad of human emotions. Momentous forms of dances are Langvir Nritya (performed by males) and Barada Nati (largely performed in Dehradun during the festivals). In addition, paintings and crafts are also the major attractions of the state.

Geographically situated in the western Himalayan Region, more than 90% area of the state is covered by mountains. The forest area in the state is 64%. Further, the state has some of the snow clad mountain peaks that remain snow covered round the year. Nanda Devi, one of the highest mountain peaks of India is located in this state. Its settlements are also located at various altitudes and hence, it has wide range of weather systems starting from subtropical to alpine. Types of vegetations and animals also vary accordingly.
