Popular as "Scotland of East and abode of cloud," Meghalaya is one of the north-east states of India. It shares its boundary with Assam in the east and north and in the south and west, it shares its international boundary with Bangladesh. Shillong is the capital and largest city of the state. Though, it was the part of Assam, but on January 21, 1972, it became independent state with its districts of Garo, Ghasi, and Jaintia hills. Though, Garo and Khasi languages are much popular but official language is English.

Geographically, it is mountainous region with plateaus and river basins. The hills of the state are largely consist Archean rock, which consists of rich deposits of valuable minerals including coal, uranium, limestone etc. The important rivers of the state are Daring, Sanda, Bandra, Bhogai, Dareng, Nitai, Simsang, Umkhri, Digaru, Umiam, Myngot, Umiam, Mawpa etc. Interestingly, these rivers have deep gorges as well as beautiful waterfalls.

The state is the wettest region of India, recording an average of 1200 cm of rains a year. The town of Cherrapunji located in the Khasi Hills holds the world record for most rain in a calendar month. On the other hand, the village of Mawsynram, located nearby Cherrapunji, holds the record for the most rain in a year. About 70% of the state is forested. The forests of the state are remarkable for their biodiversity of mammals, birds, and plants.

The state has also rich local culture and tradition; however, unlike most of the other parts of the country, it has matrilineal system in which the lineage and inheritance are traced through women. Normally, the youngest daughter inherits all properties; however, she is also liable to take care of her parents.
