As shown on the Goa Map, the small area of Goa is surrounded by Maharashtra in the north, Karnataka in the east and south, and by Arabian Sea in the west. And, the region in which it is located is known as ‘Konkani;’ therefore, its language is also Konkani.

Though, it is the smallest state of India, but Goa is the richest state of India in terms of its GDP per capita. Eleventh Finance Commission ranked it as the best placed state because of its infrastructure and National Commission on Population ranked on top for the best quality of life in India.

Historically, Goa was the Portuguese colony until 1961 after that it became part of India; however, its official status was the territory of India until 1987. Finally, on May 30, 1987, it became an independent state of India.

Topography of the state is not alike rather it has mountains, river valleys, and coastal plain. Western Ghats (Mountain Range) separates it from the Deccan Plateau. The important rivers of Goa are Mandovi, Zuari, Terekhol, Chapora etc. The rivers facilitate water transport in the state and therefore, they are busiest rivers of India. The total length of Goa’s navigable water is more than 250 km. Furthermore, Goa has the coastline measuring more than 100 km.
